News

User Groups: Joys & Challenges A Conversation with John Weeks & Rafael Vanoni is a video in which John and Rafael (from the San Francisco user group) discuss OpenSolaris user group topics such as membership and meeting activities.

James Liu and OpenSolaris Team Roundtable Podcast on java.net. Listen to our own James Liu speaking with Sun IHV support colleague Vicki Abe, J.D. Duncan from Toshiba, and Sun Java.net program manager Gary Thompson about device support on OpenSolaris 2009.06. The discussion took place at CommunityOne West and is posted on java.net. I clicked the "download the MP3" link and was able to play the interview with no problem on Rhythmbox Music Player on my Toshiba M10 running OpenSolaris 2009.06.

Meeting DateSpeaker, Topic, Presentation Materials
Nov 19, 2009Margaret brought her December 2009 issue of Linux Journal, which is focused on robots and embedded systems. Check out the Player Project software for controlling robots - it runs on Solaris. Margaret plans to build a potato mesh and an electric motor. John showed his steps for building ON - we will post this here soon. Paul from Vormetric says Vormetric's customers are asking for their products on Solaris. He also said they are using zones in house. James McPherson joined us from Australia. He had worked on the DDRdrive Solaris driver. Chris George was there again from DDRdrive and gave us an update on the driver status. Garrett D'Amore is now working on the driver. It is working in a demonstration capacity, not quite ready to advertise and ship. Garrett invites any interested parties to help with testing. Garrett's blog and driver source code.
Oct 22, 2009John Totah discussed cybersecurity. John talked about the history of cybersecurity issues (Morris Worm, 1988, for exmaple), and what the Obama administration is doing today. John discussed that finer grained control of security policy leads to greater security, high reliability and availability lead to greater security, high software quality and lower bug rates lead to greater security. John mentioned the top 10 recommendations for achieving greater security from Software Security: Building Security In by Gary McGraw.
Sep 24, 2009Alan Coopersmith led an informal chat about OpenSolaris desktop changes and other questions about OpenSolaris development. Alan is the tech lead for the X Window System Consolidation in Solaris and OpenSolaris. He led the project to migrate Solaris from Sun's proprietary Xsun server to the Xorg open source server and integrate the latest X11R7 versions of the X.Org community code base into Solaris. He also contributes on Sun's behalf to the X.Org community project, including serving as the community's release manager for X11R6.9. He has been a long-time member of the Solaris Desktop C-Team, served on LSARC (the Layered Software ARC) for several years, just finished two terms as a member of the OpenSolaris Governing Board, and is now a member of the X.Org Foundation Board of Directors. For those of you who follow OpenSolaris.org and X.org development lists, you already know that Alan is a very active contributor and replies on a wide range of topics. Alan's blog also includes a wealth of great information. Larry won the Sun Spot kit and promised to do something interesting with the kit and report back to our UG. Last but certainly not least, Christopher George of DDRdrive thrilled us with his extremely fast storage device. If you can help with the driver for it, let us know!

Jun 25, 2009John: I have an interesting application of the new OpenSolaris Crossbow technology that I'd like to share with our UG, and hope that we can use it as an example of future UG activities that we can work on together. I also plan to bring the mysterious Twitter Cube (top right) and share what was going on at C1/J1.
May 28, 2009James Liu showed his new camera on his Acer Aspire. John Weeks showed his radar application: "I have an ultrasonic sensor mounted on a servo that's connected to an Arduino. On the laptop side, I'm using Processing language that I ported over to OpenSolaris to control the position the servo and read the distance from the ultrasonic sensor and display it in the form of a radar screen. Processing on the laptop is communicating with the Arduino through a USB/serial cable using a new FTDI OpenSolaris driver (available in build 113)."
