Margaret plans to build a potato mesh and an [[electric motor>>http://www.wikihow.com/Build-a-Simple-Electric-Motor]]. John showed his steps for building ON - we will post this here soon. Paul from [[Vormetric>>http://www.vormetric.com/]] says Vormetric’s customers are asking for their products on Solaris. He also said they are using zones in house. James McPherson joined us from Australia. He had worked on the [[DDRdrive>>http://www.ddrdrive.com]] Solaris driver. Chris George was there again from DDRdrive and gave us an update on the driver status. Garrett D’Amore is now working on the driver. It is working in a demonstration capacity, not quite ready to advertise and ship. Garrett invites any interested parties to help with testing. John talked about the history of cybersecurity issues ([[Morris Worm>>http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/103008-morris-worm.html]], 1988, for exmaple), and what the [[Obama administration is doing>>http://csis.org/program/commission-cybersecurity-44th-presidency]] today. John discussed that finer grained control of security policy leads to greater security, high reliability and availability lead to greater security, high software quality and lower bug rates lead to greater security. John mentioned the top 10 recommendations for achieving greater security from //[[Software Security: Building Security In>>http://www.swsec.com/]]// by Gary McGraw. 97: |Sep 24, 2009|Alan Coopersmith led an informal chat about OpenSolaris desktop changes and other questions about OpenSolaris development. Alan is the tech lead for the X Window System Consolidation in Solaris and OpenSolaris. He led the project to migrate Solaris from Sun’s proprietary Xsun server to the Xorg open source server and integrate the latest X11R7 versions of the X.Org community code base into Solaris. He also contributes on Sun’s behalf to the X.Org community project, including serving as the community’s release manager for X11R6.9. He has been a long-time member of the Solaris Desktop C-Team, served on LSARC (the Layered Software ARC) for several years, just finished two terms as a member of the OpenSolaris Governing Board, and is now a member of the X.Org Foundation Board of Directors. For those of you who follow OpenSolaris.org and X.org development lists, you already know that Alan is a very active contributor and replies on a wide range of topics. [[Alan’s blog>>http://blogs.sun.com/alanc/]] also includes a wealth of great information. Larry won the Sun Spot kit and promised to do something interesting with the kit and report back to our UG. Last but certainly not least, Christopher George of [[DDRdrive>>http://www.ddrdrive.com/]] thrilled us with his extremely fast storage device. If you can help with the driver for it, **//let us know!//** 98: |Jul 23, 2009|"[[Building Wacky Contraptions with OpenSolaris>>http://en.oreilly.com/oscon2009/public/schedule/detail/10457]]" OSCON BOF 99: [[BOF slides>>attach:User Group svosug@OSCON-SVOSUG-BOF.pdf]] [PDF] 100: |Jun 25, 2009|John: I have an interesting application of the new OpenSolaris [[Crossbow technology>>Project crossbow.WebHome]] that I’d like to share with our UG, and hope that we can use it as an example of future UG activities that we can work on together.
