Melbourne OpenSolaris User Group (MSOSUG)
This group exists to drive awareness and adoption of Solaris and OpenSolaris in
the Melbourne region of Australia. We are unashamedly technical in our meetings, and focus on the technologies, rather than any single product.
Our desire is to increase technical awareness and skills, and to help enable adoption of OpenSolaris based technologies wherever they are a good fit and encourage users to become more familiar and active with OpenSolaris and the new features made available over time either through Solaris, Solaris Express or OpenSolaris.
It is hoped that the MSOSUG will ultimately contribute documentation and code changes back to the community. If you would like to contribute, let the list know.

Upcoming Meeting: Wednesday August the 19th, 2009
Where?
- Level 7, 476 St Kilda Road, Melbourne,
When?
- Wednesday September the 16th 2009 at 18:00 for general discussion.
Last month, we a took a trip down performance alley a discovered that 2-3 hours is really only just enough time to have the start of a decent talk about CPU and Memory from a performance monitoring and understanding perspective.
This month, we'll give I/O the same 'starter' treatment and perhaps finally get to the part about new Nevada / Opensolaris putbacks. (There has been some awesome stuff go back in the last few months...)
Speakers start at 18:30 sharp, with Pizza arriving somewhere around
20:00ish.
Topics include
*Andre and Nathan: Solaris Performance. We won't make you an expert, but will start you down the road to understanding Solaris I/O and a little about it's performance characteristics.
Expect the performance discussion to be lots of questions and answers. And - possibly more questions. :)
*Andre, and Nathan and perhaps Mr Maltby (if he's interested!): Recent Nevada putbacks; what's interesting and what do we want to talk about more?
If you plan to attend, please reply NOW to
nathan.kroenert@optusnet.com.au so that we can plan for seating /
pizza / drinks!
To anyone who meets with or talks to folks interested in Solaris: Please
let everyone know about the meeting, the time and the date. We have a great core group of 30+, and would love to continue to grow the group.
A note on access: The Lifts in the building and entrance to Level 7
automatically lock early in the evening, so access will be provided by
Sun folks on-site. A sign will also be placed close to the ground floor
lifts with a contact number, should you arrive after the start of the
meeting.
If you are interested in Solaris, doing interesting things with, or on
Solaris, we want YOU!
Topics planned for the upcoming meetings
- Solaris / Opensolaris performance management / observation
- Using OpenSource for a whole business!
- Differences and management of co-resident S10 and SX / OpenSolaris
- Using Mobile Phones with Solaris for Data access (NEXTG sort of stuff)
- SAMfs/QFS
