23 March 2010

This months meeting will be a what's new roundup and will include:

  • First up are lightning talks. These are 5 minute talks on a single topic. Just come along on the night and talk! You might want to lead a short discussion on a topic of your choice.
  • Then Alex Sims will look at what's new in Oracle Solaris 10/09 and then what should be new in the OpenSolaris 2010.03 release.

P.S. Please bring about $7.50 for Pizza!

During the meeting we'll distribute the 2009 TShirts, CDs, mini-books and "Powered by OpenSolaris" stickers (once you've successfully installed of course :-) ).

There will be an opportunity to bring your OpenSolaris/Solaris issues and questions to the assembled group (without fee:-), particularly installation issues. Installation disks will be available at the meeting (including OpenSolaris 2009.06, 2010.03(release 134) and Solaris 10/09) so you might want to bring your laptop and install, eat pizza and learn about OpenSolaris.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

For the purposes of catering please RSVP either:

  • email to rsvp dash adl dash osug at softgrow dot com
  • telephone/SMS to Alex on 0458 67 0011

At the Meeting

We had a lively meeting with an attendence of three.

There were lightning talks and a good deal of discussion before the presentations were underway including:

  • We agreed the summary of the meeting to the mailing list was a positive move (although the attendence didn't seem to reflect this!)
  • The question was posed, is a new installation quicker from a USB key or a CD, and if so by how much?
  • We disucssed Solaris 10 licensing and whether it has changed
  • This months challenge is how to use the apparent IPS repository mirror at Internode's mirror site

Alex gave a talk on whats new in Oracle Solaris 10/09 and OpenSolaris 2010.03. The most liked features on Oracle Solaris were:

  • User and Group quotas on a ZFS Pool
  • Cache devices (ie. SSD) on a ZFS Pool
  • zfs list -o space

A further topic for discussion might be about precisely when the changeover to IPS packaging from SVR4 occurs.

The most liked features on OpenSolaris were:

The most disliked feature was ls(1) now in colour. (PSARC/2009/228)

Next month we'll be looking at SourceJuicer again, this time trying to port Tuxpaint, which should be a bit easier than last time.
