Introduction

The x86 Generic FMA Topology Enumerator project will provide Solaris FMA topology enumeration for i86pc class systems. It is one part of a larger Solaris FMA generic "Platform Independence" (PI) strategy.

The value proposition for the x86 generic FMA topology enumerator is it's ability to provide identity information (part number, serial number and labels) for system components (motherboards, cpuboards, ...), as well as DIMM labels.

If you have an interest in this project, please sign up for the x86gentopo-discuss list (below) and drop us a line. We'd be interested in hearing from anyone with any type of interest; from just dropping us a note of encouragement, suggestions on how to accomplish some task better, or offering to code.

Overview

The enumeration will contain correct placement of FRUs as well as correct FRU label data. This will allow the correct identification as well as indictment of FRUs.

The bulk of the FRU identity information will be taken from the system SMBIOS. There will also be the need to obtain topology data from a dynamic source such as ACPI tables; which will be crucial in platforms that support hot plug and/or dynamic reconfiguration.
