Project Sitara: Small packet forwarding performance improvment

 Project Overview:

 Initial Goals:

    • Improve small packet forwarding throughput by leveraging Crossbow's polling, classification, and fanout capabilities as well as driver optimizations for 1GB and 10GB nics. Any gains delivered here will also be beneficial to other Solaris applications, expecially those that make use of smaller packet sizes such as VoIP.
    • Improve scalability of IP traffic (not just TCP and UDP) for NICs that have additional packet FIFOs.
    • Add PF_PACKET support on Solaris (which could be optimized underneath to provide the best performance). This will allow an application to send and receive packets, dealing directly with the network card driver, thus avoiding the usual protocol stack-handling (e.g., IP/TCP or IP/UDP processing)
    • Add Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol(VRRP) protocol support on Solaris for router HA solution.
We welcome feedback and collaboration from the OpenSolaris community for these features.
Sitara project related discussions are being held at VNM-discuss@opensolaris.org
