Introduction
Presto aims to improve Solaris printing approachability by automatically (or as automatically as possible) discovering and configuring access to directly attached, network attached, and remotely served printers. Key goals include:
- Provide users with a more hands off/automatic mechanism for using printers that they plug into their host or local network.
- Provide a mechanism for automatically recognizing and configuring access to existing print queues as they move across networks.
- Use SMF for managing network queue discovery/advertising services
- Tighter desktop integration.
Status
We are working on all aspects of this project right now. We have fleshed out some of the basics of the project, but still have a lot of work to be done on design. As we are working on this, we are prototyping various components to figure out what works and what doesn't. This also gives us a means of exchanging ideas in a more concrete manner. Access to the schedule, documents, prototype, and and code are linked below.
Prototype
An evolving prototype of Presto related functionality is available for download and installation from http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/presto/Prototype/. Follow this link for information about download, installation, and usage.
