Page to specify v2 of the OpenSolaris portals:
The following is a list of features/improvements the community would like to see for v2. This is a work in progress and the basis for a more detailed specification. You're welcome to join the discussion over at i18n dash discuss at opensolaris dot org.
- portals based on one language, such as fr.opensolaris, could use subdivisions for regional events (for example, France, Canada, Belgium)
- subdivisions for the various languages spoken within a single country (India, China, ..)
- allow translation of the currently non-translatable sections (e.g. news, files, announcements, ..) and the upper menu (discussions, communities, ..) or at least have them pointing to the current portal
- increase usability of Portal sites, specifically:
- linking between the English pages on www.opensolaris.org and the corresponding translated pages in xx.opensolaris.org
- tag pages and let the users know the list of languages that particular content is available in
- likewise, if a local site can indicate to the users that a continued article that's not yet translated is available on the main site
- have the ability to see if a translated page is in sync with the English original, for the main, identical parts.
- be able to store the language of a given page (the default XHTML tags are lang="en" and xml:lang="en")
- ability for each portal to translate 100% of the content on the portal — including icons, graphics, and any webapp-driven content.
- wiki-like functionality so that edits to pages can be tracked by editor as well as an easy way to revert to a previous edits.
- need proper presentation of all portals on the front page of the site: drop down menu, box, .. ? So people will know that the site has been internationalized into x many languages and they will have easy access to those language sites.
- ability to have country portals /and/ languages portals depending on the choice of a given community. There should be no conflict between the two schemes.
- ability to log in to opensolaris.org through any of the Country Portals (xx.opensolaris.org) – instead of being redirected and have to log in again
