OpenSolaris Portals Project

PLEASE NOTE: The Country Portal Project is no longer active. The content here is for archive purposes only. See i18n-discuss and/or the International & Localization Community for portal issues and/or content translations issues.

Background

Having opensolaris.org content written in multiple languages is critical for engaging developers and users in non English-speaking countries. That's what this project is all about: translating the OpenSolaris website into many languages.

The OpenSolaris engineering team provided opensolaris.org templates to a limited number of community portal teams. The portals are basically temporary project spaces on opensolaris.org altered to look like the main site but within top level country domains. The point here is to create multilingual sites within the main English site to provide non-English developers an entrance into OpenSolaris in their own language. Over time, the portals will grow to include as much local material as is required to support a given community within the meta OpenSolaris community.

The Portals Project will create and manage the process of who translates what and who maintains the portals, which all live on the central opensolaris.org infrastructure. The site infrastructure will evolve, and we expect more support for internationalization going forward. For right now, though, consider the country portals a rough v1.0 implementation. Each country portal has leaders, just as any project on opensolaris.org, and those leaders are responsible for maintaining their portals. This is a community project. Sun employees participate, but Sun is not funding the translation of the portals.

Proposing New Portals

The Portal Project is not accepting proposals for new portals at this time. We will continue working with the i18n Community and the Website Community to translate opensolaris.org via XWiki.

Portal Discussions

The Countries Portal Project uses i18n-discuss as its primary list. After some country portals are open, conversations may split off into existing languages lists within the community as leaders work on their portals in their own language. However, for all meta portal issues, and to communicate with leaders of other portals, please use i18n-discuss as the main portal list.
