Songbird was integrated into the OpenSolaris Desktop (JDS) project in October 2008 (build 99).
You can install Songbird simply by running: pfexec pkg install SUNWsongbird
SUNWsongbird is maintained in the spec-files-other repository. Additional Songbird builds, including pre-release builds, for OpenSolaris may be hosted on Songbird's server. The GStreamer Input Selector plugin addon was necessary for builds of 1.0.0 to work, but is no longer necessary.
Project Nightingale is an OpenSolaris project that will be porting the Songbird Desktop Media Player to the OpenSolaris platform.
The Songbird media player is a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) desktop media player that "plays the web". In addition to supporting the usual media library management/player capabilities, it presents APIs to add-ons (extensions) and websites allowing for bidirectional interaction between the media player and the web. It leverages existing open source software, namely it is based on the XULRunner codebase from the Mozilla project. It also leverages other technologies such as GStreamer and VLC for its media playback. There are both Songbird and OpenSolaris users who would like to see it ported to OpenSolaris. We have an existing set of patches and work done, but have run into hurdles with XULRunner and could use the help and skills of other Desktop and Mozilla contributors in the Desktop Community.
This project intends to port Songbird, and its dependencies to OpenSolaris. Patches will be kept in sync with upstream releases and every effort will be made to contribute and integrate sources back into upstream source trees.
