COMSTAR Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • QUESTION: Is there a 1T-byte limit for logical units (LUs) used with COMSTAR?
ANSWER: COMSTAR can support an 8 Exabyte logical unit as long as the underlying file system can support the size. For example, UFS can support up to 2 T-bytes, while ZFS can support 8 E-bytes.
  • QUESTION: Is there a limit on the maximum number of LUNs that can be exported through COMSTAR? I was doing a scalability study for which I needed a large number (about 4000) of LUNs. COMSTAR allowed me to create / map / mask 4000 LUNs, but from the host side I am not able to see all the LUNS.
ANSWER: COMSTAR can support any number of LUNs per system (limited by host memory only). On a per Initiator-port/Target-port pair, you can export as many as 16384 LUNs. We have tested with 4096 LUNs on a Solaris initiator. I remember that the support of 4K LUNs on the initiator side on Solaris was added recently. Maybe you are running into some initiator side issue. The OS version you are using on the initiator side may be the problem. You should be using the SXCE B90 (or later) on the target side. The packages that used to be on the project page have not been updated in a long time (now they have been removed).
  • QUESTION: Will an EMC branded Qlogic 4gb HBA work with COMSTAR as a FC target?
ANSWER: Yes, any Qlogic 4G/8G HBA should work.
  • QUESTION: I have been testing out the new COMSTAR SCSI framework, and I have a few questions about support. It has Qlogic fibre channel HBAs listed as supported, but for some reason I can't get the qlt driver to bind to the HBA. I am currently using a 2Gbps Qlogic QLA2342 HBA, and following the directions exactly results in the qlc driver being unattached but after reboot the qlt driver won't attach to the HBA for some reason.
ANSWER: Qlogic 2G HBAs are currently not supported under COMSTAR. The support is for 4G (and onwards only). The release notes page (on this site) documents this fact. Emulex support for COMSTAR is underway, with expected support of Emulex 2G HBAs.
