Welcome to Indiana!
The OpenSolarisTM Developer Previews are OpenSolaris binary distributions. The initial prototype releases provide the “Slim Install” Live CD for x86 platforms. The Live CD includes a basic core operating system and GNOME desktop environment, with the option to install an OpenSolaris operating system (OS) from the Live CD. After the installation, additional packages can be downloaded by using the new Image Packaging System (IPS).
The main documentation hub for this project is at Gateway to Indiana.
The OpenSolaris Developer Previews include the following components:

Slim Install “Live CD” |
The Slim Install “Live CD” boots to a functional GNOME desktop. The desktop includes Firefox, Thunderbird, and other core applications. nwam is enabled to manage your network interfaces. For further information, see What is a Live CD?. You can execute the Slim Installer by using the Installer icon on the desktop. The Slim Installer enables an initial installation of the CD's contents to an x86 system. The installed root(/) file system is ZFS. |
Note - The Slim installer prototypes cannot upgrade an existing operating system. The installer can perform an initial installation into a selected primary Solaris partition (preserving existing partitions) or use an entire disk. Installation overwrites all software and data on the selected target.
This Getting Started document provides detailed information about the Slim Installer. |

Distribution Constructor |
The OpenSolaris Developer Previews include the Distribution Constructor, a tool which can be used to create your own OpenSolaris distribution. The Distribution Constructor is a command-line tool that enables you to create a bootable live media image with a list of packages specified by you. You specify the list of IPS packages to be included in the image in a file. Then, you direct the Distribution Constructor to use the package information in that file. The Distribution Constructor tool processes the list of IPS packages and builds a live media image that contains only the list of packages that you specified. |
Note -
This Distribution Constructor prototype has the following restrictions:
- The Constructor prototype supports only IPS packages. SVR4 packages are not supported.
- The Constructor prototype outputs only live media images. No other type of image is supported.
For directions about how to download the Constructor tool and how to get start using this tool, see Distribution Constructor Kit: Documentation. |
Image Packaging System (IPS) |
The OpenSolaris Developer Previews include the Image Packaging System. With IPS, you can select versioned builds of components to manage or create your own custom OpenSolaris distribution. IPS packages that are not included in the Slim Install installation image, such as developer tools, can be downloaded after the installation. The prototype releases use IPS commands to access packages from the network repositories. Both IPS packages and SVR4 packages are supported. |
Image Packaging System Documentation contains man pages and a Getting Started guide. |
