Caiman is the code name for the program, and set of projects, to create a new Solaris installation experience. The working ideas center on concepts such as:
- Updated, simplified and attractive graphical and text user interfaces
- Integrated hardware compatibility testing
- Integrated live CD/DVD experience to provide a "try before you buy" capability
- Deep integration with the latest Solaris features, such as ZFS and SMF
- Simplified system configuration, integrated with the post-installation experience
- Simple, fast, and reliable installation of additional software after installation
