1: == Winning Contest Entries 2: 3: === And the Winners are... 4: 5: * **Genunix.Org - a high bandwidth community download facility** 6: **Al Hopper, Plano, Texas, USA, Grand Prize: $30,000** 7: Genunix.Org has been in operation since opening day in June 2005 and has provided a valuable, high-bandwidth community resource, providing downloadable content and a community wiki facility. 8: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/genunix_org.txt]] [txt] 9: See [[http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page>>http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page]]. 10: * **Port NX+freenx to Solaris x86** 11: **Roberto Dircio, Mexico Distrito Federal, Mexico, First Prize: $15,000** 12: Build an easy to use package with ported binaries for freenx+nomachine NX for OpenSolaris, both SPARC and x86. Note that there is no current official port for nomachine nx server for Solaris x86. 13: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/freenx.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 14: * **Super with SuperScheduler and SuperWatchdog** 15: **Wei Jiang, Ashburn, Virginia, USA, First Prize: $15,000** 16: Super with SuperScheduler and SuperWatchdog is a Java task scheduler with rich GUI for all application job scheduling. It is platform neutral. Especially good to be a job scheduler for Linux and Solaris. It provides a superset of functionalities of the Scheduler of Microsoft Windows. It provides event-triggered scheduling as well. It can schedule tasks in a distributed environment. A task will be executed once and only once among all machines in the network. All tasks are holiday adjustable. Even if every job is a STANDBY job, the history will be a good trace for important tasks. It supports internationalization. A Chinese properties file is provided. 17: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/super1073forsolaris.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 18: See also [[http://www.acelet.com/>>http://www.acelet.com/]]. 19: * **cayac** 20: **David Galan Ortiz, Madrid, Spain, First Prize: $15,000** 21: Welcome to Cayac, your personal web server for OpenSolaris 2008. Setting integrated web server, PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin. It operates with a single command SMF. Cayac is very easy to install, you do not need to be an expert! 22: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/cayac.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 23: Note that this project has been updated since it was entered into this contest. This project now has a new web and version, it has a screencast, documentation, and a new look. See [[http://www.aulaunix.org/cayac/>>http://www.aulaunix.org/cayac/]]. 24: * **Small OpenSolaris Live Distro** 25: **Alexander Eremin, Saint-Petersburg, Russian Federation, Second Prize: $6,000** 26: MilaX is a minimal live distribution which runs completely off a CD or flash memory device. It is based on OpenSolaris and includes the same basic features found in Solaris Express Community Edition. As a result, MilaX can be used as a "Rescue CD." MilaX seeks to be small enough to be installed on various embedded devices, limited size media (such as CD business cards, etc.), and other resource-constrained platforms as these are not targeted by existing OpenSolaris distributions today, while maintaining core OS functionality. MilaX is free to use, modify and distribute. 27: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/milax.txt]] [txt] 28: See also [[OpenSolaris Project: MilaX minimal Live Distribution>>Project milax.WebHome]]. 29: * **RAM based boot for BeleniX 0.7** 30: **Shampavman Chengeri, Bangalore, India, Second Prize: $6,000** 31: This project is aimed at providing a RAM based boot for BeleniX. This means, during boot time the compressed HSFS filesystems are directly copied onto the RAM from the CD and all subsequent operations are executed from RAM. This naturally reduces the subsequent launch time of applications significantly. Since BeleniX comes bundled with KDE as well, most of the heavy applications that have huge lauch times are now reduced to seconds. This also means that BeleniX (which is ~3.5G) installs in 10 minutes, which typically used to take 30 minutes. This is a staggering improvement of ~65%. Secondly, it gives the user a privilege of using his own disks and work on it without having to install an operating system just for this purpose! 32: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/belenix.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 33: See the [[OpenSolaris downloads>>Main.downloads]] page or the [[BeleniX download>>http://www.belenix.org/download]] site. 34: * **SMF Manifest Creator** 35: **Ricardo Severo and Diogo Luiz Bhm, Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, Third Prize: $1,000** 36: This application will help system administrators to create new SMF Manifest XML files and deploy them. It will also allow editing already existing files. 37: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/SMFManifestCreator.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 38: * **phpEasyTools** 39: **David Galan Ortiz, Madrid, Spain, Third Prize: $1,000** 40: This project is created in PHP, so you do not need configuration. It is meant to take the first steps in OpenSolaris. The application shows you the commands that are running. 41: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/easySMF.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 42: See also the [[OpenSolaris Project: Easy Tools>>Project phpEasyTools.WebHome]]. 43: * **Bluetooth stack for OpenSolaris in user space** 44: **Anand Bheemarajaiah, Bangalore, India, Third Prize: $1,000** 45: This is the Bluetooth stack built for OpenSolaris completely in user space - operational only with USB dongles and capable of transferring files with other Bluetooth devices (mobile phones, PDA, etc.). The stack is built using libusb and contains obex FTP profile and obex push profile bundled along with the application. 46: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/bluetoothstack.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 47: * **Zetaback** 48: **Theo Schlossnagle, Columbia, Maryland, USA, Third Prize: $1,000** 49: Zetaback is a thin-agent based ZFS backup tool. It is designed to: run from a central host, scan clients for new ZFS filesystems, manage varying desired backup intervals (per host) for full backups or incremental backups, maintain varying retention policies (per host), summarize existing backups, restore any host:fs backup at any point in time to any target host. 50: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/zetaback.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 51: * **Sun Cluster agent for ZFS/NFS HA using non-shared discs** 52: **Marcelo da Silva Leal, So Paulo, Brazil, Third Prize: $1,000** 53: Sun Cluster agent for configuration of a high availability ZFS/NFS server (using non-shared discs), using AVS for the synchronization/replication task. 54: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/SunClusterAgent.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 55: See also [[OpenSolaris Project: MRSL.NONsharedDevice>>Project ohac-avs.WebHome]]. 56: * **Solaris DTrace Screencasts** 57: **Marcelo da Silva Leal, So Paulo, Brazil, Third Prize: $1,000** 58: Screencasts about DTrace Solaris/OpenSolaris technology. 59: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/screencasts_dtrace.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 60: * **Solaris Containers Screencasts** 61: **Marcelo da Silva Leal, So Paulo, Brazil, Third Prize: $1,000** 62: Screencasts about Solaris containers technology, explaining how to: manage resources (CPU, memory) and use two zones to handle web applications in a secure way. 63: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/screencasts_containers.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 64: * **Making useful syscalls into executables** 65: **Paul Armstrong, Mountain View, California, USA, Third Prize: $1,000** 66: This project aims to make many of the syscalls that are useful in shell scripting available as executables. 67: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/syscalls.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 68: * **SolView - Solaris Information Viewer** 69: **Peter Tribble, Cambridge, England, United Kingdom, Third Prize: $1,000** 70: SolView is a Java application that displays useful information about an (Open)Solaris system: general information services, and installed software. It also allows exploration of SVR4 packaging, showing dependencies in an easy to understand manner, and allowing the interactive construction of a jumpstart profile. 71: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/SolView.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 72: See also SolView in the "News" column of [[Peter’s Solaris Zone>>http://www.petertribble.co.uk/Solaris/]]. 73: * **Small Solaris Network Attached Storage live image (EON)** 74: **Andre S. Lue, Fresh Meadows, New York, USA, Third Prize: $1,000** 75: EON is Small Solaris NAS (network attached storage) image based on OpenSolaris. This is a RAM based live/install image which runs from CD, USB or CF (compact flash). The appliance provides a high performance 32-bit storage solution built on ZFS using cost effective disks. 76: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/EON.tar.gz]] [tar.gz] 77: * **Art Installation: "Defero Inuctus: community united"** 78: **Tamarah Ann Rockwood, Tracy, California, USA, Third Prize: $1,000** 79: A gallery of sculptures symbolizing the relationship between Sun and OpenSolaris, along with insights from the artist. 80: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/motive.pdf]] [PDF] 81: * **Introduction to Operating Systems Slide Show** 82: **Kurchi Subhra Hazra, West Bengal, India, Third Prize: $1,000** 83: Since people prefer to go through slides nowadays rather than reading up an entire book, I propose to convert the book //Introduction to Operating Systems: A Hands-On Approach Using the OpenSolaris Project (Student Guide)// into slides in odp, ppt, and PDF format. 84: [[Download this entry>>http://dlc.sun.com/osol/awards/downloads/current/OSintroslides.tar.gz]] [tar.gz]
