opensolaris.org is the online home for developers and users around the world interested in collaborating on the future development of the OpenSolaris code base and distribution. The website is made up of over a dozen applications and subsites that provide various services, and there are hundreds of Collectives where people meet, work on code, and evangelize the technology.
Yes. To participate in discussions about the website, post to website-discuss AT opensolaris DOT org. Subscribe to the list here. There is more information about the website at the Website Community Group as well. The OpenSolaris community on this site welcomes community participation, such as contributing code, packages, translations, presentations, bug reports, and documentation.
Yes. We host Community Groups, Projects, and User Groups on the site. All the information for proposing and managing website infrastructure can be found on the Infrastructure Life Cycle Instructions page.
The main community space on the site is at hub.opensolaris.org, and that domain hosts an implementation of XWiki as the content management system. But community members can only edit pages inside Collectives in which they have edit privileges. See the Roles & Collectives document for a full explanation about how the website is structured and how editing is managed.
You can subscribe to the community's Mailman lists without registering on the site. The discussions page outlines all the information about the lists. There are also many OpenSolaris discussion channels on IRC, and this site provides a web client to access the live conversations on Freenode right away.
Cross-posting between mailing lists should be avoided, but list administrators can decide how to manage their lists in collaboration with their respective Collectives.
There is one jobs list where these postings are permitted. Subscribe be here. All other lists are for OpenSolaris-related development and community-building projects.
When you create a user account on opensolaris.org, you will be asked to choose a user name and a real name. The information from these fields will be shown throughout the system to identify you. If you do not wish to have your actual name shown, you can use a handle, such as "SolarisLover57", as your real name. However, email addresses and names are published on the Mailman mailing lists. More information can be found on the discussions page.
No. All messages sent to opensolaris.org mailing lists are archived. Do not send any information to a list that you do not want made public. Our site policy is to never edit the archives except in cases of SPAM, viruses, or the posting of proprietary code. In addition, if you choose to include your email address as part of your signature file, it will be included in the archives, and we will not remove it from the system.
Yes. All community members should subscribe to the OpenSolaris announce list, and everyone is free to post news about their development projects and user activities. The list is moderated for one way traffic, but messages are approved if they are directly related to the OpenSolaris community and written by community members. Subscribe here. Post to opensolaris-announce AT opensolaris DOT org. Do not cross-post to opensolaris-announce or your message may be rejected.
You edit your profile and other account information using auth.opensolaris.org. Log in and choose "Edit your account." You can also choose to inactivate your account using this edit page.
