OpenSolaris Website Guidelines

General Information

This document is published by the Website Engineering Team, which is part of Sun's Open Development Engineering Team. The Website Team builds and manages opensolaris.org on behalf of Sun Microsystems and the OpenSolaris Community and also leads the Website Community Group. The Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and Trademarks Policy cover the legal aspects of opensolaris.org, and users are encouraged to consult those documents as well.

Website Discussions

For general community discussions about the website, post mail to website-discuss AT opensolaris DOT org. Subscribe here.

Reporting Website Issues

For website user account issues or to report spam or violations of the Website Terms of Use, post mail to website-admin AT opensolaris DOT org. Sun's Website Team will respond to your report as soon as possible.

Reporting Community Disputes

Contact the OpenSolaris Governing Board at ogb-discuss AT opensolaris DOT org to report community disputes and to discuss resolution policies documented in the OpenSolaris Constitution. Subscribe to ogb-discuss here.

Website Content

opensolaris.org is a community website funded by Sun Microsystems. The content on the site and within the site's mailing lists and forums should consist of only relevant information about OpenSolaris development operations and community building programs. Sun will use a small space on the front page inside a box marked "Sun Sponsored Links" for OpenSolaris-related product placements, and this use was approved by the OpenSolaris Governing Board in July 2008. Generally, there are three broad categorizes of content on the opensolaris.org website: common content, collective content, and applications/sub-site content. All three areas are described below.

Common Content

Sun's Website Team manages the common content on opensolaris.org. This content includes pages such as the following: front page, project overview, FAQ center, roadmap, site map, downloads, sub domains, etc. Requests to update this information can be made on website-discuss.

Collective Content

Leaders of Collectives (Community Groups, Projects, User Groups) are responsible for managing their own content and adhering to this policy and the TOU. Collectives can link to resources outside opensolaris.org as long as the TOU is followed and the content is related to this website. Website infrastructure can be requested to support new Collectives, and community members can start that process by following the Collective Life Cycle Instructions.

IMPORTANT: Sun employees may NOT use Sun's internal corporate presentation templates for public presentations. Use the OpenSolaris presentation templates instead. Also, do NOT post to opensolaris.org any documents marked with "confidential" or "proprietary" or similar notices. If the information is not confidential and is appropriate for the community, please remove the confidential notice before posting. This is NOT optional. Documents marked "confidential" in any way can be deleted by the site administrator without notice.

Applications/Sub-Sites Content

The website is made up of multiple applications and sub-sites that provide services to users and developers. See the site map for details and contact the sub-site owners for further information.

Mail Lists & Website Infrastructure

Collective Leaders are responsible for properly managing their mailing lists and website infrastructure. For instance, lists are subject to review based on the TOU and may be deactivated and/or terminated due to insufficient traffic (no posts in the last month or less than 3 posts in the last 3 months) or poor management of non-member messages accumulating in moderator queues. Also, if website infrastructure is abandoned, the Website Team can deactivate and/or terminate the infrastructure. See the Collective Life Cycle Instructions for full details about how each Collective can be deactivated and/or terminated.

Announcements

Community members can post their OpenSolaris-related announcements to opensolaris-announce AT opensolaris DOT org. This is a moderated list for one way traffic, and most announcements are approved within a few hours. DO NOT cross-post announcements to other lists, or the announcement mail may be rejected. Jobs

Companies interested in hiring OpenSolaris community developers and users can post requirements to opensolaris-jobs AT opensolaris DOT org. This is the only approved list for job-related discussions. Subscribe to opensolaris-jobs here.

Website Maintenance

Sun's Website Team regularly updates opensolaris.org to maintain system performance and add new features. These updates may require the entire website infrastructure (or specific applications, such as mail servers or the source code management system) to be unavailable for scheduled periods of time. The information below details our scheduled maintenance procedures.

• Regular website maintenance will be scheduled for Tuesdays between 6-8 AM (U.S. Pacific Time), whenever possible.

• If a machine will be down for less than 30 minutes we will provide at least 3 hours notification on both the opensolaris-announce and the website-discuss mailing lists.

• If a machine will be down for more than 30 minutes we will provide 3 days of notification time on both the opensolaris-announce and the website-discuss mailing lists.

If you have experienced a problem with an application after an upgrade, please contact the website-discuss mailing list to report the issue you encountered.

Policy Updates

Sun's Website Engineering Team will update this policy to reflect changes in the OpenSolaris community and/or program.
