OpenSolaris Communities

OpenSolaris communities are social groups whose members engage in open conversations and will have representation in the governance process.  Although communities do not have source repositories, it's expected that communities will endorse technical projects and have projects of their own.

Community members can propose new Community Groups by writing to the ogb-discuss list outlining items such as goals, technical scope, potential participants, leaders, and activities. Proposals need to list at least 3 current Core Contributors who are nominating the community, at least 3 participants who will become the initial Core Contributors of the new community, and one person who will serve as the community's Facilitator. Further details on Community creation and governance can be found in Article VII of the OpenSolaris Constitution. And the Collective Life Cycle Instructions document explains the implementation details.

A Community targetting to the Chinese market, with Chinese Universities as the top priority.
  • Community Advisory Board (CAB)
The OpenSolaris Governing Board (OCB) oversees the functioning of, and resolves disputes within, the OpenSolaris Community. The Board is elected by the Community's Core Contributors.
  • Databases
This community is a gathering place for both database users and engineers building databases on Solaris. Any discussions relevant to databases on Solaris are welcome here. Some potential discussion topics: how to improve Solaris to better serve database technologies; how to make databases run best on Solaris; differences between various database technologies and which one is best suited for a given use; and so on.
  • Desktop
    The OpenSolaris Desktop Community
  • Device Drivers
The Device Drivers will promote and support the creation of additional device drivers for OpenSolaris.
  • Distribution
The Distribution Community exists to facilitate the collaborative design and development of OpenSolaris-based distributions.
  • Documentation
Documentation, including the feature documentation collections, man pages, and guides.
  • DTrace
DTrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing framework for the Solaris Operating Environment.
  • Emerging Platforms
Modifying OpenSolaris to work on additional processors and platforms as well as in embedded and other environments.
  • Fault Management
Tools, technology, infrastructure, and content to permit Solaris and Sun products to recover from, diagnose, isolate, and explain faults.
  • Games on OpenSolaris
The OpenSolaris games community serves to list games that can be played on OpenSolaris, to provide instructions for downloading and running them, and to host new games that OpenSolaris contributors have written.
  • HA Clusters
A community for exploring high-availability cluster innovations, research, and implementations, including the Open High Availability Cluster project.  This community focuses on clusters for high-availability, as opposed to HPC clusters, grids, or other cluster technologies.
  • HPC Developer
The goal of this community is to promote High Performance Computing on OpenSolaris.
  • Installation and Packaging
Technologies and processes related to installation, packaging, patching, and construction of OpenSolaris distributions.
  • Internationalization and Localization
Community for OpenSolaris software internationalization and localization.
  • Laptop
Using Solaris as your ultimate mobile computing platform.
  • Logical Domains
Logical Domains, or LDoms, is Sun's new server virtualization and partitioning technology for CoolThreads(TM) servers.
  • Modular Debugger (MDB)
Solaris Modular Debugger (MDB) is a debugger designed to facilitate analysis of certain problems.
  • Networking
    A community on Networking
  • NFS
Network File System as implemented in OpenSolaris
  • Observability
Tools and facilities for observing software and hardware behavior on OpenSolaris.
  • OS/Net (ON)
    Information for ON developers
  • OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB)
The OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB) oversees the functioning of, and resolves disputes within, the OpenSolaris Community. The Board is elected by the Community's Core Contributors.
  • OpenSolaris Printing
    Printing technologies
  • Performance
    The OpenSolaris Performance Community
  • Power Management
Power Management encompasses all aspects of a system, from hardware to the software that uses it. In OpenSolaris, power management is currently being discussed or developed in various interest areas, such as drivers and laptops. However, as power management is gaining momentum in servers, tools and other areas than laptops and drivers, having discussions in those groups without the benefit of the audience of other interest areas, may generate conflicting or competing solutions.
  • PowerPC
The goal of this community is to create an OpenSolaris port that runs on PowerPC hardware.
  • Security
    The Security Geek Corner
  • Service Management Facility (smf(5))
The Service Management Facility is a mechanism to define, deliver and manage long-running application services for Solaris.
  • Software Porters
A community for organizing and co-ordinating efforts to port software to the OpenSolaris Platform.
  • Solaris Volume Manager
An enterprise class logical volume manager. The goal of this community is to discuss its features and collaborate on future enhancements.
  • Storage
A community for storage in OpenSolaris. We are interested in hardware, filesystems, and protocols for remote access of the storage.
