Feature Spot: OpenSolaris Caiman Project
The OpenSolaris Caiman Project has been delivering innovations in installation technology to OpenSolaris for over a year. The effort will result in a completely rebuilt installation experience for users, developers, and administrators. Three new Caiman features being developed include the ability to create and distribute a customized x86 virtual machine, support for creating auto install (AI) media that can be booted directly to initiate an automated installation, and support for a text installer. Users will be able to create and modify extended partitions as part of automated installations, install to an iSCSI disk target using the automated installer, choose from four expanded options for defining a target for an automated installation, and use the new installadm list command to view information about install operations. To get involved in project development, subscribe to caiman-discuss and participate. User documentation in progress is also available. |
Welcome to OpenSolaris.org Open Source The majority of the OpenSolaris code base is distributed under an OSI-approved open source license. Code based on existing open source projects continues to be available under its current license(s), and some binary-only components are covered under the OpenSolaris Binary License. Compatible The OpenSolaris code base supports systems that use SPARC® and x86 families of processor architectures: UltraSPARC®, SPARC64, AMD64, Pentium, and Xeon EM64T. View the OpenSolaris Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). | Community-Driven The OpenSolaris community develops a wealth of technologies ranging from storage software and ZFS, to comprehensive system analysis tools like DTrace. Our community represents a wide variety of developers, administrators, instructors, and students around the world. Here are some ways people are getting involved, and here are some community contributions to multiple code consolidations. Everyone has something to contribute, so we welcome your participation. Join In Our new network-based package management system, IPS, which is included in the OpenSolaris OS LiveCD, needs your package contributions.
