Setting Up and Managing Printers From the Desktop by Using OpenSolaris Print Manager
This page includes information about using the OpenSolaris Print Manager to configure
and manage printers that have been automatically discovered by the system.
Note that starting with the OpenSolaris 2010.03 release, CUPS is the default print service.
CUPS includes a graphical user interface (GUI) that is similar to the OpenSolaris Print Manager. However, the OpenSolaris Print Manager is part of the LP print service. If you want to use the LP print commands, the Solaris Print Manager GUI,
or the OpenSolaris Print Manager to configure printers, you must first install the recommended packages and enable
the required services.
How to Initiate the HAL add-on module for network printer discovery.
Before the system can actively scan the network for devices, you must first initiate the HAL add-on module for this feature. You can use GNOME desktop tools to enable this feature.
How to Initiate the HAL add-on module by using the Service Management Facility (SMF).
You can initiate the HAL add-on module by using the svcadm command. Run this command to enable the network discovery services.
When the system discovers a new directly attached or network attached printer, the system notifies that the device has been discovered. The Add Printer Queue dialog enables you to complete the printer setup and configuration.
