Subject: HEADS UP: PSARC 2009/319 MII & GMII Common Layer

If you don't develop drivers for Ethernet or administer Ethernet device
settings, you can probably safely ignore this message.

The push of

PSARC 2009/319 MII & GMII Common Layer
    6730277 Generic 802.3 MII/GMII Support for GLDv3

provides a new common MII and GMII subsystem for Ethernet device
drivers. As part of this some of the drivers have been converted to use
it (afe, dmfe, iprb, and partially elxl).

Those drivers that have been converted can use the MII layer to simplify
their code, and support new features including Brussels (full support of
ndd and dladm link management) and SunVTS netlbtest testing.

You might notice that some legacy properties for managing links on some
of these drivers have been removed. Please use the dladm command to
manage link settings for these drivers going forward.

If you work on or sustain a 10/100/1000 type of Ethernet device driver
that is integrated into ON, I highly recommend adapting your driver to
use the new MII module in misc/mii. A header file describing the API is
located at uts/common/sys/mii.h.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this, or review
the case materials for PSARC 2009/319.

Thank you.
