How to Start with OpenSolaris Translation

Would you like to help with OpenSolaris translation activities? If so, you are in the right place.

How to Start ?

• Check to see if there are other contributors to your preferred language or existing l10n groups. Do this by looking at l10n/i18n community structure list asking in your introduction and also checking to see if there is a mailing list for your language. Coordination of translation for particular language is driven by each l10n group. 

• Register yourself on opensolaris.org
• In order to contribute,
  • You have to have sign the Oracle Contributor Agreement (OCA) and return it via fax, email or send via regular mail

We recommend to use CTI tool for OpenSolaris UI messages and Documentation translation. The tool contains active translation projects both for SW messages and Documentation for various languages. See section 'What to do if my language or project is not on the list?' below. In order to start with CTI tool, you first need to register on the CTI page using your OCA ID and other details. Please note that your OCA ID is the ID which you obtained in your notification email from Oracle. Once these steps are complete, you can start with CTI.

What to do if my language or project is not on the list?

Check out the existing language groups, if there is no team for your language. If not, you are welcome to create a new l10n team. A process is the following:

• create an account at opensolaris.org pages
• send an email introducing yourself to the i18n-discuss main community mailing list
• wait for approval of creating new language group
• the new language and contact to you will be added to the table of localization teams
• we will create new translation projects in CTI tool for your language
• start with translation via CTI tool

^{Note:  The only requirement is that a locale for your language already exists in OpenSolaris. In other words in order to translate UI strings in a system, the system (OpenSolaris) must be i18n ready for this language. If your locale is not ready, please submit a new bug (component 'i18n-l10n')}

CTI? What's that?

• CTI (Community Translation Interface) is a web application created by the Globalization department of Oracle for open-source community translators. It currently supports not only the OpenSolaris community but also additional Oracle driven open-source projects (e.g. Netbeans, GlassFish, OpenDS, etc)

• CTI makes translation easy, translators only need to take care about localization, integration process is made directly by Oracle Engineers.

• CTI was designed with the goal that any user of OpenSolaris should be able to translate any part of the operating system. To use CTI, one needs to know which part of OpenSolaris they want to translate. The different parts of OpenSolaris localization are divided into "translation projects."

• The CTI allows you to use our globalization management system remotely by viewing and editing the Translation Memory (TM). The OpenSolaris TM is organized into projects, files and segments. Each segment is a piece of text translated into many languages. A segment can be a word, a sentence or even a paragraph.

• Recently, we launched the a version of CTI tool, called Sun OpenCTI. You can use this version in parallel with the old one.

How to Translate on CTI?

• Source and target language segments appear side by side on CTI editor.  Same translation leveraged from the past translation is already inserted to the target segments, if available.
• Translate only the blank cells.  To show only the new translation, use the pull down menu called "Show me" on the top right of CTI editor.
• Please make sure to click Save before you go to another page.  Otherwise, all of your edits will be lost.

Coordination of translations

So far, CTI does not support translation project management features that can help with a project coordination. We suggest each l10n team and l10n lead will coordinate translation activities for particular language and project. 

What to do if translations are finished?

When you are done with translations, please send us email (i18n-discuss at opensolaris dot com) and we integrate translations into workspace. There is no mechanism in CTI that can detect if the project has been finished. When we obtain your email, we will integrate messages into OpenSolaris.
