Caiman UI Mockup Download & Screenshots

These screenshots are the initial UI design of the Caiman installer. The screenshots are "wireframes", i.e., they approximate the intended appearance and functionality. The layout, wording, and content details are still in flux. Scroll up to see screenshot-specific notes below each image.

In addition to these screenshots, a  downloadable zip file of the interactive mockup from which these screenshots were captured is available. It is large (12MB). This mockup is a "wireframe", i.e., it represents the page flow and approximate page content only. The visual design, layout, and precise content are still in development. To run the mockup, open index.html in the unzipped "prototype2" directory. Operation of the mockup has been verified in Firefox and Netscape 1.7. It is reported to work in Safari. It does not work in IE or Netscape 1.4.

Startup: The Caiman installer is a desktop application that runs from either a LiveDVD or a running system. The desktop is usable while the installer runs.

Welcome: The subsequent installer screens are dependent on task: Install, Update, Refresh, Add. The "use" question applies only to the Install task and will determine the default software load which can be refined later in the installation.

Target Selection: The installation target can be any disk, fdisk partition, or solaris slice of sufficient size, or any existing ZFS pool with sufficent free space. If installing to a disk, fdisk partition or Solaris slice, Caiman will create a ZFS pool and install into it's root file system. Additional storage space and mirroring can be added to the ZFS pool post-install.

User: The user will have an administrative account. However, it is not required.

Installation: The installation summary displays the user's inputs and some default settings. The user can change these by clicking on the appropriate tab prior to clicking the Install button. Additional configuration, should it be required, can be done after the installation reboot.

Installation Progress: Messages about new features and useful sites will be displayed as the installation progresses. They will contain links that the user can open and use in a browser while the installation continues.

Installation Complete: When the installation is complete the user is asked to remove the DVD before rebooting. Rebooting is not automatic because the user may be performing some other activity on the desktop.
