So, now that we have a fully staffed CAB, we are going to have our first
meeting in San Francisco on April 4th. We had a preliminary conference
call yesterday to meet each other and go over logistics.
Aside from creating its own charter, the CAB has one basic deliverable
that Sun specifically announced on Jan 25: the creation of a governance
proposal that can be debated, iterated, and ratified by Sun and the
OpenSolaris community. The creation of that proposal will involve many
close conversations with Sun and the community over an extended period
of time on a variety of issues.
I'll be submitting to the CAB some initial co-development proposals
(basically summaries of earlier discuss mail conversations on
co-development) and other community documents (anything I think of that
they may need) for consideration to get the process started. The CAB
will have to specify a mechanism for interacting with the community and
with Sun to discuss all the issues under consideration in a transparent way.
The CAB can certainly chime in here to talk further about their upcoming
meeting, and Sun marketing can certainly chime in to talk about
marketing and PR activities they have planned when the CAB visits San
Francisco.
My role here is to support the CAB from a program management point of
view. Basically, I'm the secretary. The CAB asked me to provide this
service, and I'm more than happy to do it. I'd like to thank the CAB for
the opportunity, actually. Also, please keep in mind that although I'll
be supporting the CAB in this capacity, I will not have any content
role, and I will not act as a gatekeeper for the community or for Sun.
Although I'll be present for many CAB conversations (but probably not
all), I will not have a voice in those conversations. Which is good
since I'd be lost, anyway.
I'm not sure how we'll update the pilot community on CAB activities
before we launch, but I'm sure that will be discussed and we'll report
back in some way.
