Vote for the candidate or candidates you would like to support as
representatives on the CAB by replying to this email (include the text
below in your reply) and by placing an "X" in the bracket next to the
name of each candidate. Leave the rest blank. The two candidates who are
selected by the most voters will be appointed to the CAB. You can vote
for as many candidates as you like.
This type of voting is called "Approval Voting." For more details, see:

The election ends on March 1, so be sure to send your ballot in by then.
I'll send out one reminder next week. Remember, simply reply to this

Hi,
Sorry I'm a bit late to react, but does that mean that Sun employees are
not entitled to vote for the two external CAB seats?
If we are not, I can understand why since the the community might fear
some potential vote-rigging, but I still resent the hidden implication
that as a Sun employee I have forfeited my free will (having been at Sun
for a while, I know this is not true).
In any case, if a decision was made either way, I may be wrong, but I
don't recall this being discussed on the pilot. Shouldn't it have been ?
Cheers
Caryl

My understanding of the _current_ CAB election process is that
Sun elects or otherwise decides on three of the members and the
rest of the world elects two of the five.

Correct. Sun employees can not vote for the community's two CAB
participants. However, Sun is not forfeiting anything and nothing is
hidden. We've tried to craft a fair and open system to *begin* the
process of representation for all involved. Going forward, the CAB
itself will devise many of the processes that it follows, including
future elections, charter, activities, meetings, etc.
There will be five people in the CAB to start: two community members
elected by the current members of the pilot community, two Sun employees
appointed by Sun, and one external open source person not involved with
Sun and not involved with the pilot community. These issues have been
discussed on this list for about a month, the outline of the CAB has
been posted on the pilot site
(https://www.opensolaris.org/projects/Wiki.jsp?page=OpenSolarisProgram),
we've had several weeks of nominations, we've discussed it internally at
Sun at the engineering and executive level, and it was announced
publically at the Jan 25th launch
(http://www.opensolaris.org/cab/index.html) when we released DTrace, the
license, and the roadmap.
The election ends tomorrow at noon pacific. I'll announce the results at
5 pm pacific. Shortly, Sun will announce the other three participants,
and we'll most likely make a public announcement sometime in March (
TBD) as we promised we would at the Jan 25 launch.
It's not a perfect system, granted, but I actually feel pretty good
about it as a way to get us started. Sun is taking this very seriously,
and so is the pilot community. If anyone has any issues, please feel
free to contact me.
Best,
Jim
