Applications tested under the lx brand

The following table shows which applications have been tested under the lx brand and describes how well, or poorly, they worked.  There are three levels of success:

  • Green: Works flawlessly, or nearly so.
  • Yellow: Major functionality works, but significant problems have been observed.
  • Red: Failures are significant enough to render application useless.

If an application is listed as 'red' or 'yellow' below, it does not mean that the application will never work.  Development of the lx brand is ongoing, and we are constantly striving to deliver a higher-fidelity Linux environment.  As this is all Open Source software, you are welcome - nay, encouraged! - to dig deeper into why your favorite application is failing, and possibly even provide a fix.

If your experience with an application differs from that reported below, or if you have a report of a new application, please send it to brandz-discuss@opensolaris.org.

Application Description  Success Level  Notes
acroread    Adobe's PDF reader  Green  Tested 7.0.1.  Available here - at least for now.  Newer versions require gtk 2.4, which is not available in the supported Red Hat / CentOS versions.
apache         Web server          Green   Static pages and simple CGI scripts work. Nothing more complex has been tested.
Bioware Neverwinter Nights server        Game server         Green    Download location
 firefox        Web browser         Green
FLEXlm         License Manager     Green  Only the client side has been tested.  Testing has only been done in conjunction with MATLAB 7.2 testing since FLEXlm is required for running MATLAB.
 gcc            GNU C compiler      Green
gdb            GNU debugger        Yellow    Works for single-threaded processes
GT.M            Database and Mumps Compiler  Green
Maple 11    Technical software  Green     'It works like a charm. No fiddling-around of any kind needed.'
MATLAB       Technical software  Green     Tested 7.2. Everything seems to work, but we're not exactly MATLAB experts.  Later versions of MATLAB don't work since they require newer versions of glibc.
 mysql          Database            Green
 opera          Web browser         Green
openoffice     Office suite        White  Was flaky for a while, but hasn't been tested in months
 Oracle         Database            Green
 perl           scripting language  Green
Postgres       Database       Yellow  Can use existing databases, but cannot create new ones.
quake          Game                Green  Needs native OpenGL drivers for acceptable performance
Simulink       Dynamic system simulation  Green  Tested 6.4.  Everything we tried succeeded, but we didn't have all the industry modules.
srcds          Game Server               Green  Server for Half-Life 2 based games.  Nice writeup on the lx and srcds installation processes here
skype          Voice over IP       Yellow  Application is functional, but with poor latency
 thunderbird  Mail client  Green
 xchat          IRC client       Green
