Welcome to OpenSolaris User Groups
OpenSolaris User Groups (OSUGs) are sponsored by the Advocacy Community on opensolaris.org, and all the information you need to get involved is right here. Please subscribe to advocacy-discuss (subscribe, archives, forum) and osug-leaders (subscribe, archives) if you have any questions.

Join an OpenSolaris User Group
Look for user groups in your area. If you find one, simply join that group's list, introduce yourself, get to know the members, and participate.
Start a New OpenSolaris User Group
If there is no established user group in your area, you can propose that a new group be created and hosted on opensolaris.org. To get user group infrastructure on the website, which includes an XWiki space and a mailing list, send a short proposal to advocacy-discuss for approval. You need one +1 vote and no -1 votes, and voting is open on advocacy-discuss for three days. Write your proposal in the following format:
- Full User Group title [1] and its abbreviation name [1] for the User Group URL (For example: Full Title: Japan OpenSolaris User Group. Abbreviation name for URL: jposug). Although "OpenSolaris" is a trademark [2] of Sun Microsystems and can not be used in Community Group and Project names, it is considered fair use to use OpenSolaris in the name of a User Group. We encourage this format.
- A brief public description of the User Group and its location, including your location (City, State, Country), activities planned, related organizations, etc. Keep it simple.
- The opensolaris.org user names and email addresses of the User Group's Leaders.
- If the User Group requires a mailing list, the name [1] of the list, and the names of Leaders who will administer the list. Names for User Group lists should be in the following format: ug-[name]osug AT opensolaris DOT org.
If your user group proposal is approved, the Advocacy Facilitator will work with you to get your user group space set up via the Infrastructure Life Cycle Instructions. Also, note that the role of Advocacy Facilitator, which is a governance role, is open right now so if you are interested in volunteering see the Constitution and/or the Facilitation Project for details.
OSUG Leader Responsibilities on opensolaris.org
As a leader of your new user group, it is expected that you will maintain your XWiki space and Mailman mailing list (filter spam, add/remove names, communicate with the OpenSolaris webmaster and other community members on advocacy-discuss and osug-leaders, etc), just as all the other Collective Leaders in the OpenSolaris Community. Please review the documents below so you are clear about website issues, especially the policies around mail list management. For instance, if lists are not used and properly managed, they can be deleted after a period of time.
Follow the appropriate website, trademark, project, and community policies:
- OpenSolaris Website Guidelines
- OpenSolaris Trademarks
- Infrastructure Life Cycle Instructions
- Posting Source and Binaries
- Website Roles & Collectives

IMPORTANT: Sun employees may not use Sun's internal corporate presentation templates for public presentations. Use the OpenSolaris presentation templates instead. Also, do not post to opensolaris.org any documents marked with "confidential" or "proprietary" or similar notices. If the information is not confidential and is appropriate for the community, please remove the confidential notice before posting. This is not optional. Documents marked "confidential" in any way can be deleted by the site administrator without notice.

Notes
[1] The "title" of any Collective on the site is the text appearing at the top of a group's home page and also in the left drop-down navigation bar. That text can be edited. The "name" of any Collective on the site is the text that appears at the end of the URL. That text can not be edited once chosen and it must be unique to all the Collectives on the site. Also, regarding names for mailing lists, most groups choose to name their lists using the same name as as they use for their Collectives. This is not required but it is highly recommended for consistency.
