JavaOne San Francisco 2006 | 05/16/2006

The OpenSolaris community has alot of activity going at the JavaOne2006 Conference—Between participating in news announcements, demonstrating in the booth, gathering with the Silicon Valley OpenSolaris User Group, and sponsoring the Freedom Toaster event, this will be a big week for us. Couple of big items:

Tuesday, May 16—

Check us out in the Sun Booth (Pod 740) where we're showcasing the community, the distributions and the code. Thanks to community members Stephen Lau and Dan Price for rigging NexentaOS for view at the booth, along with the JDK binaries. We're planning to have NexentaOS Live CDs at the booth as well.

Stay tuned for a news announcement coming later this morning where OpenSolaris distributions BeleniX, SchilliX, and NexentaOS are featured.

Later in the evening, we'll be gathering at the Thirsty Bear Restaurant (Howard Street, across from W Hotel) to join the Blogger's event hosted by Simon Phipps. Starting at around 5:30, we'll have the SVOSUG meeting upstairs. After, it'll be fun combining with the JDK crowd who will be holding an UnBof. Come by if you're in SF!

Wednesday, May 17—

OpenSolaris will be hosting the Freedom Toaster "toast to open source" gathering for JavaOne exhibitors at the Moscone—Room 123. Register if you'd like to attend—
 ( JavaOne badges are required to get into the event). We'll be loading an Ultra 20 with Sun's Free and Open Source Software—ISO images that will make it possible for people to step up and "toast" a cd of the software without needing an Internet connection. The system will have Solaris 10, and as many ISOs of the distributions of OpenSolaris as we can line up!

Sun will be donating the system to a township in South Africa. It's the coolest way to close the digital divide that is so real in that region of the world. More Freedom Toasters are planned for placement over the coming months as well.
