 Editorial Note: These newsletter issues below are from 2004 and 2005, which was a time before the project opened or shortly after opening. The newsletter has evolved and improved greatly since then, but we wanted to archive these documents on opensolaris.org rather than having them sit rotting behind the firewall. The documents may give a glimpse of what some parts of the project were like during the early phases. - Jim G

September 2004

Executive Summary (Status)

  • Source code cleanup and due diligence underway. An agreement for rights to open source some standards code within Solaris was just signed.
  • Pilot program for building the community and testing the website content and functionality began on 9/20.
  • Internal and external community building meetings and efforts are in progress. The most recent event was the Open Source Software Summit at Sun on 9/14.
  • License discussions are underway both at the executive level and with open source experts outside of Sun.

Detailed Status

Source code cleanup / due diligence

  • Making progress on code analysis.
  • Agreement with some partners means that some additional code has been cleared for opening.

Pilot program

  • Pilot program was launch on 9/20 with 15 participants. Several others have been identified, and are in the process of signing the software evaluation agreement. Initial participants published on the internal wiki. 
  • Jim Grisanzio and Prashant Ketkar are in the process of identifying specific companies to add to the pilot program.
  • Several Platinum Beta customers are also interested in participating and will be added to the program in the coming weeks.
  • There will be a phased approach to the pilot in terms of content and participation - customers, partners, universities, open source developers, etc.

Community building

  • There will be several people from Solaris engineering and the Tonic team attending the LISA conference in November. We will include Tonic in discussions about Solaris with no NDA.

Open Source License

  • Members of the Tonic team met with several leaders in the open source community to discuss the licensing options under consideration.
  • There have been some executive-level discussions about the license, and we hope to come to resolution on this question very soon.

Cross-SMI engagement

  • Presented to TS Ambassadors, GSO Edu quarterly meeting, and groups within Software. Presentations are scheduled at the OS Ambassadors meeting, MDE Week, and Immersion Week.
  • Sustaining has assigned some engineers to help work with the community and adapt engineering processes for the community.
  • Presentations to teams across Sun ongoing.

Tools

  • Glenn Weinberg is driving the compiler decision with John Loiacono and Jeff Jackson. We hope to have a decision in early Oct.
  • Andy Tucker is working on a proposal for source code management, and that should be available in Oct.

Internal training/cultural change

  • The Open Source Software Summit was a great community building event. Sun and external participants spent the day and dinner discussing their experiences with open source software projects.

October 2004

Executive Summary (Status)

  • Pilot program currently has 31 external participants and 85 internal participants. Goal is to have 100 external and hundreds of internal participants by launch.
  • Launch date and venue under discussion. Look for an announcement soon.
  • Tonic discussed at Scott McNealy staff. License decision pending. Received green light to submit new MPL-derived license (Common Development and Distribution License aka CDDL) to OSI for approval.

Detailed Status

Source code cleanup / due diligence

  • Copyright analysis and source code cleanup ongoing.
  • Some engineers outside Tonic team have joined the effort.
  • Aggressively recruiting to get even more engineers involved in order to speed up time to completion.

Pilot program

  • Working with O'Reilly to produce articles and content for the site.
  • As S10 bugfixing slows down, will work more closely with the Solaris engineering team to create content.

Community building

  • Solaris and Tonic engineering team members will host a BOF at the USENIX LISA system administration conference in Atlanta the week of 11/15. For more details, contact Jim G.
  • College recruiting presentation materials used by the Solaris Kernel team have been updated to also pitch Solaris 10 and Tonic.
  • Looking at giving a Tonic preso at the upcoming JA-SIG Winter Conference in New Orleans on 12/6.

Open Source License

  • Tonic discussed at Scott McNealy staff. License decision pending. Received green light to submit new MPL-derived license (Common Development and Distribution License aka CDDL) to OSI for approval.
  • Tonic Update to be given at November SMI Board of Directors meeting.

Cross-SMI engagement

  • Presentations were made in several different venues in October including OS Ambassadors, MDE Week, OPG staff, Marissa Peterson's staff, Laurie Tolson's staff (J2EE) and Peter Young's staff (Network Storage). See ongoing list of presentations on the internal wiki.
  • In November, members of the Solaris and Tonic teams will present at Immersion Week.
  • Partnered with several internal groups including OEM Software Sales, CNS, Services, GSO Education, and Security to identify overlaps, interactions, and responsibilities related to the Tonic effort.

Tools

  • Decision made: Studio compilers will be provided to OpenSolaris users at no charge. Details on the license agreement are still being worked.
  • We are also working on making gcc work (for the stuff that wasn't already ported by amd64). But that has a longer timeline, and is not seen as a requirement for day 1.
  • Initially, only bug queries and bug submissions will be supported via bugs.sun.com which is currently used by the Java organization.

November 2004

  • Engineering has targeted March 28, 2005 as the ready date for launch. The actual launch date and venue are being planned by Marketing. Look for an announcement soon.

Detailed Status

Source Code Analysis/Cleanup

  • Copyright analysis and source code cleanup ongoing.
  • Multiple engineers from outside Tonic (sustaining, security, SKaDS, and Linux) are helping out on a part-time basis.
  • Recruiting to get more engineers involved to speed up completion.

  • Pilot program currently has 44 external participants and 110 internal participants. Additional participants are being added daily. 
  • Need more and more internal participants to join in the conversation and to help with the community building effort.

  • Source was refreshed on 11/09.

  • A second article from O'Reilly was published on 11/3 at the opensolaris.org site.
  • Delivered downloadable source tarball to pilot participants.
  • A finally delivery of the artwork style sheets was made to AltaStrada on 11/23.

Community Building

  • Dave Linder and Claire Giordano hosted a Solaris10/Tonic Roundtable BOF at Immersion Week 11/16 & 11/18.
  • College recruiting presentation materials used by the Solaris Kernel team have been updated to also pitch Solaris 10 and Tonic.

Cross-SMI Engagement

Tools

Executive Summary (Status)

  • Pilot Program currently has 56 external participants and 132 internal participants. Our goal is to have 100 external and hundreds of internal participants by launch.
  • Engineering has targeted March 28, 2005 as the ready date for releasing the code and community website. Look for announcements regarding licensing and other news. Possibly looking at OSBC for launch event.
  • As of December 17th, 2004, it has not been determined which license will be used for OpenSolaris. However, Sun has submitted the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) to the OSI for approval. The OSI board did meet, but the vote did not happen during the last week of December. We are still waiting for a vote and hope it will be done by 1/10. For more information on CDDL, go to http://www.sun.com/cddl/

Source Code Analysis/Cleanup

  • Three main phases for "buildable source". You can find detailed information about each phase on the wiki.
    • Buildable for the Pilot participants (mid-late January)
    • Buildable for launch (early March)
    • Ready for putback (mid April)

 Pilot Program

  • We are entering the second half of the program (in terms of getting people in), and are starting to get bigger names involved now. During the week of the 12/24, 8 new developers added and another country as well.
  • Pilot program currently has 56 external participants and 132 internal participants. Additional participants are being added daily. 

 Website (opensolaris.org)

  • Reviewing website requirements and priorities to prepare for an early CY05 Tonic launch.
  • One of the main pieces of content which must be available during the pilot program is the Developer's Reference.
  • Please visit the wiki for the website requirements, project goals, rationale for in-house development as well as a wealth of information on features.

 Community Building

  • We are having ongoing conversations with sources throughout Sun who have contact with customers, partners, ISV's, universities, and individual developers throughout the Solaris market.
  • College recruiting presentation materials used by the Solaris Kernel team have been updated to also pitch Solaris 10 and Tonic.
  • Jim and Derek now leading the customer briefings with help from Claire, Bonnie, Karyn, and Andy.

 Open Source License

  • As of December 17th, 2004, it has not been determined which license will be used for OpenSolaris. However, Sun has submitted the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) to the OSI for approval. The OSI board did meet, but the vote did not happen during the last week of December.  Cross-SMI Engagement

  • Claire presented Tonic to the Solaris PAC on December 7th.
  • Claire also presented to OS Sustaining Escalations in Burlington.

 Tools

  • Free compliers have been identified as a strict requirement for launch. There are two possible approaches: the plan of record is to make the CBE SOS8 compiler freely available, an alternate is to port to gcc on all platforms, not just amd64.
  • Initially, only bug queries and bug submissions will be supported via bugs.sun.com, which is currently used by the Java organization.
  • Stephen Harpster/Claire/Andy working with BitMover.

  • OpenSolaris.org is now open! The source code for Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) is available right now. 
  • CDDL license has been approved and accepted as the OpenSolaris license.

  • Along with the 01/25 Announcement, buildable source code was made available to the community.
  • Three main phases for "buildable source". You can find detailed information about each phase at the wiki.
    • Buildable for the Pilot participants (Completed!)
    • Buildable for launch (mid March)
    • Ready for putback (mid May)
  • Source code analysis and cleanup is nearing completion.

Pilot Program

  • Pilot program currently has 77 external participants and 132 internal participants. 
  • We are creating an OpenSolaris Community Advisory Board (CAB). The OpenSolaris CAB will be:
    • consensus-driven
    • composed of 5 members (2 appointed by sun, elected by the pilot community and 1 selected by Sun from the broader open source community)
    • chartered with creation of a governance proposal
    • a link between Sun and non-Sun participants
  • We will not be adding any new members to the Pilot Program, but the program will continue to stay intact.

  • OpenSolaris is now open for business.
  • Here are some site statistics within the first week of the 01/25 announcement. Courtesy of Omniture and a perl script Dan Price wrote (internal link only).

Community Building

  • We are having ongoing conversations with sources throughout Sun who have contact with customers, partners, ISV's, universities, and individual developers throughout the Solaris market.
  • Blogging. We currently have 17 OpenSolaris community blogs, many of which are now fully active. Check out a few blogs from the pilot participants.
  • As per our original plan, during this last leg of recruiting, we are focusing only on significant names from our customer base for the following reasons: the community is taking shape, more Solaris engineers are involved, we have launched a public site to demonstrate our seriousness, we have buildable source, and there is more for participants to do.

Open Source License

  • CDDL license has been approved and accepted as the OpenSolaris license. 
  • Be sure to check out the Licensing FAQ.

Cross-SMI Engagement

  • Tonic council meetings have moved to bi-weekly starting at 10:00am. Our next scheduled council is set for February 10th. Also note these meetings will be con-calls from now on.
  • Johnny Loiacono presented on Tonic at Scott McNealy & Jonathan Schwartz's staff.
  • Tonic is scheduled for a keynote at the upcoming Services CEC conference.

Tools

  • Free compliers have been identified as a strict requirement for launch. We plan to use the Sun Studio C/C++ compilers. Although a decision needs to be made about making these freely and easily available ASAP.
  • We still need a decision about source code management. A plan is being developed for co-development activities.

Source Code Analysis/Cleanup

  • The majority of source code analysis is complete.
  • We continue to make progress cleaning up copyright issues, as well as replacing or splitting out encumbered code.

 Pilot Program

  • 4 out of the 5 CAB members have been selected:
    • Al Hopper and Rick Teer from the community
    • Casper Dik and Simon Phipps from Sun
  • Final external CAB member is in the process of being selected.
  • Pilot Program currently has 125 external participants. There are about 25 people in the queue in various states of approval.
  • Active recruiting for the program has officially ended.

  • The new source browsing tool has been deployed. Chandan B.N. is the mastermind behind our browsable source effort.
  • Will Snow and his group will be deploying, load testing, and managing the infrastructure.

 Community Building

  • Clarie Giordano gave a strategic talk on OpenSolaris at the CEC conference.
  • Bryan Cantrill, Mike Shapiro, Adam Leventhal, and Glenn Weinberg participated on a panel at the WERC (Worldwide Education and Research Conference). We had an OpenSolaris booth in the Solutions Pavilion, and two back-to-back BOF's on Tuesday afternoon. 
  • Glenn Weinberg presented OpenSolaris to the Japanese METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry) on 02/22.

 Tools

  • Compiler decision is still pending.
  • We have decided to re-start Teamware. The plan is to hire some engineers and contractors to fix some major issues with Teamware, e.g. scalability issues. We are currently waiting for funding for these engineers.

Executive Summary (Status)

  • The 5th CAB member has been identified. The CAB is Casper Dik, Al Hopper, Rich Teer, Simon Phipps, and Roy Fielding. We will publicly announce the CAB at the first in-person CAB meeting on April 4th at OSBC. Lots of PR/Marketing activities going on as well.
  • May 16th is our new targeted launch date. Marketing is still working on the venue details. (This is based on the assumption that the compilers are being made free).

  • Gcc work is well underway. More resources will be coming on board.
  • We continue to make progress cleaning up copyright issues, we have made tremendous progress already. However, more resources will be needed to complete cleanup.
  • Buildable source phases are on target:

    • Buildable for Launch (early April)
    • ready for putback (mid June)
  • Identifying other consolidation owners about starting analysis work for their respective consolidations.

Pilot Program

  • Total pilot participants is 140 with approximately 12 in the queue.
  • 5th CAB participant selected: Roy Fielding, co-founder of Apache
  • Public CAB announcement & marketing activities set for April 5th in SF. Preliminary CAB conference call took place on March 29.
  • Mike Kupfer and Keith Wesolowski met with Ben Rockwood to discuss getting more technical discussions happening on the mailing lists.

  • We are in the process of creating new communities on the website.
  • Discussions around trademark and a mascot have been circulating, but we are determining how the community will be involved.

Community Building

  • Some pilot folks were here for Platinum Beta the week of 03/10. Peter Tribble, Thomas Nau, and Jarod Jenson to name a few to gave presentations.
  • Stephen Harpster presented to the Dutch HBO-I International Conference Tour on 03/07. 
  • Engagement with several major universities continues. We are aggressively moving forward with targeting universities. A list of the schools is here (internal link). 
  • Jonathan Schwartz will be giving a keynote at the upcoming OSBC on April 6th. Andy Tucker will also be sitting on a discussion panel. 

Tools

  • Still waiting for a decision on the license for free-use Studio tools for the community. In the meantime, we're working on making the source base buildable with gcc.

Executive Summary (Status)

  • June 14th is our new targeted launch date. The launch will be a blogs.sun.com launch. Stay tuned for more details.
  • We are postponing all future Tonic Council meetings until further notice. Our team is in the process of investigating this meeting along with our other program meetings to see if we are overlapping anywhere. We will notify the alias when we have gathered our data and have reached a resolution.

  • Received some resources and some have yet to be defined. Once additional resources are assigned to the cleanup we insert the CDDL text.
  • Buildable source phases are on target:
    • Buildable for Pilot (complete)
    • Buildable for Launch (early April)

  • Identifying other consolidation owners about starting analysis work for their respective consolidations.

Pilot Program

  • Total pilot participants is 140 with only 2 left in the queue. The pilot program is no longer accepting requests.
  • Brought two former Solaris engineers into the Pilot program
  • The CAB held it's second meeting. They will be holding weekly meetings. Communications have begun with regard to development processes.

Website (internal site)

  • The new pilot/internal website was rolled out this week on 4/26. The pilot folks will have to register. Internal people will have to create a new password. You can then login and sign up for mailing lists. Note that all previous mailing discussions will not be available for viewing.

Community Building

  • USENIX BOF's were extremely well attended and received.
  • Andy Tucker presented to a Software Quality user group in Santa Clara.
  • Jonathan Schwartz gave a keynote at OSBC on April 6th. Andy Tucker also participated in a discussion panel.
  • Alan DuBoff hosted the first OpenSolaris user group that was held on Tuesday April 26th from 7:30pm-10:00pm at the Sun Santa Clara Agnew Campus.

Tools

  • We are working diligently to launch with gcc compilers.
  • Bugs.sun.com will happen in early June. At this point people will be able to view only ON bugs.

Development Process

  • A team has been established to drive the effort behind defining the development processes. Along with the Sun folks, two CAB members (Al Hopper and Rich Teer) join the meetings.

Source Code Analysis/Cleanup

  • Coordinating final analysis cleanup. Final resources have been assigned, and all work is targeted to be done by 6/6.
  • Continuing to work on the scripts for inserting CDDL text.

Pilot Program

  • Total external pilot participants is 144.
  • Draft governance proposal for launch and other CAB discussions are being posted to the CAB community page. CAB will initiate conversation about governance with pilot community and Sun on the discuss list.

Website (internal site)

  • The team decided to go forward with the new design provided by Dan Price and Chandan B.N. A huge thanks for all their hard work.
  • We are also continuing to address bugs/issues as they are found.
  • The Akamai solution for SDLC has slipped out, and may not be in place for launch. CAB is working with the community to have mirror sites in place to mitigate the impact of Akamai not being in place.

Community Building

  • Karyn presented to the ON Managers on May 24th and May 26th. You can find more information on the wiki.
  • Karyn also presented to the Nevada P-team on May 23rd.
  • Alan DuBoff hosted the second OpenSolaris user group that was held on Tuesday May 31th from 7:30pm-10:00pm at the Sun Santa Clara Campus. 

Tools

  • We are working diligently to launch with gcc compilers.
    • working through issues as they come up.
    • came up with integration plan recommendation.
  • Bug searching for O/N and SFW bugs is available at http://bugs.opensolaris.org/. Working to make bug reporting functionality available. Other bugs.sun.com features (e.g.,voting) will not be available for launch.

  • Yes, OpenSolaris launched successfully on June14th. Finally.

Detailed Status

 Source Code Analysis/Cleanup

  • We're working on the first update to the community (build 18).
  • Made gcc project gate available to the community.
  • Darren Moffat made a tarball of crypto code available to the community at the end of June.

 CAB

  • The CAB will start publishing sections of the governance proposal on their public list for discussion over the next two weeks.
  • The CAB's discuss list will be opened to the community. Currently it's read only.

 Website (opensolaris.org)

  • There are 7,176 registered users on the site.
  • Figuring out what work needs to get done in the coming weeks. The intermediate term website work has dependencies on decisions that have not yet been made:
    • What level of project support to provide on the site (i.e.,sourceforge-like support)
    • Source code management tools (which is tied in with the project question)
    • What to do about consolidations
  • We are also continuing to update website content as needed.

 Community Building

  • Karyn presented to SPARC Platform SW Advisory Team (SP SWAT) on June 29th.
  • Keith and Mike presented at the Solaris user group on June 28th.
  • Alan DuBoff hosted the 3rd OpenSolaris user group that was held on Tuesday June 26 from 7:30pm-10:00pm at the Sun Santa Clara Campus. 

 Tools

  • There are now sources available that build and work with the version of gcc posted on opensolaris.org.

  • Put Tonic Application Version 1.03 in production to fix clustering issues.
  • Set up Xen, User Group communities.

  • Desktop community (JDS & KDE) has been opened.
  • We are also continuing to update website content as needed.

 Community Building

  • User Group community opened with several groups already contributing.
  • Lively external discussions about ksh and the importance of compatibility.
  • The Silicon Valley OpenSolaris user group held another meeting on July 26th, in Menlo Park.

December 2005 OpenSolaris Community Newsletter

Editor's Note: This issue of the OpenSolaris Newsletter is a little late because we are updating how we produce the newsletter itself. Apologies for the delay. The OpenSolaris community is growing rapidly in multiple directions, and we'd like the newsletter to cover as much of the community as possible. A Sun team produces the newsletter, but we'd like input from anyone interested in participating. So please feel free to respond to program-team at opensolaris.org and offer your news items or suggest any issues you'd like us to cover. Also, any feedback on the format or content would be most appreciated.

Overview: Although December was filled with holidays and vacations, it was still a time of growth for the OpenSolaris community. We continue to see new user groups opening up and meeting around the world, OpenSolaris community members are presenting at conferences around the world, and new communities are opening on opensolaris.org. Although BrandZ was the only community to open on the site this month, several more communities and projects have been proposed, are forming, and will appear in January.

New Components Released

Website Functionality

  • The 1.2.1 release of the website is complete. An overview of the new features is here. The "basic" projects feature is now live. For information on how to get your projects on the site, please see this thread on : cab-discuss.

Community Building

Community building is all about getting out there and talking to people. Nothing beats a face to face meeting to go along with talking on lists and blogs. OpenSolaris community members are clearly increasing their involvement at conferences, and they are continuing to form user groups. It's not uncommon for a new user group to garner 50 people for a first meeting. As user groups grow, the topics of discussion are starting to diversify, and more people are starting to participate in new ways. Community members are taking photos and shooting videos and posting their presentations to share their experiences, and you can see everything here: http://opensolaris.org/os/community/advocacy/os-presentations/

Here are the highlights for December

User Groups

  • The SVOSUG had it's first annual Holiday open-potluck on Tuesday December 20. The topic of discussion was BrandZ.
  • The LOSUG (London OpenSolaris User Group) met on December 19th. Topics of discussion included, what's new in OpenSolaris (aka. "Flag Days"), deeper with DTrace, and anything you would like to know about OpenSolaris but were too afraid to ask. 
  • The BJOSUG (Beijing OpenSolaris User Group) held its third meeting on December 3rd with Max Bruning presenting "A Comparison of Solaris, Linux, and FreeBSD Kernels and Device Drivers" and Mark Nelson talking about the "OpenSolaris Development Process." Max also wrote an article on this topic for opensolaris.org. Some photos here.
  • The first IOSUG (Israel OpenSolaris User Group) was held on December 1st. The agenda included an OpenSolaris overview, some demos, and a group discussion on the mandate/future of the Israeli chapter. 
  • Moinak Ghosh presented an introduction to BeleniX and Sriram Popuri presented Zones - A Virtualized OS Environment at the Bangalore Open Solaris User Group (BOSUG) on December 10.
